TOUR THE CENTRE - 4

FAMILY DINING ROOMS

Bring out the fine china, the silver, crystal and linens. Special occasions call for pulling out all the stops. The Family Dining Rooms are used regularly for family gatherings and celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries or maybe just a relaxing homemade Sunday dinner.

These comfortable, elegant rooms bring a home-away-from-home coziness to intimate family gatherings. A fridge, stove, sink and microwave are available to residents and their families who can dine in and feel as if they've had a special outing.

The Family Dining Room is also the room of choice for the Ladies' Tea and Social Club meetings where the ladies gather regularly to visit and enjoy the fine surroundings.

LIVING ROOM & FIREPLACES

At the entrance to each of the centre's 12 neighbourhood homes is a kitchen/dining room that leads to a Living Room area complete with comfortable furnishings, a television and a warm, inviting fireplace. And the fireplaces are not just a seasonal pleasure. All year 'round residents take advantage of the comfort and solace they find sitting in a cozy chair by the warm glow of the fire. Nearly every day one resident in particular wraps himself in not one but two warm sweaters and heads straight for his favorite spot by the flickering flames.

As you leave the living room, you enter a corridor with resident rooms on each side. Everyone has a private room with a bathroom and space for some of their special pieces of furniture,.

HORTICULTURE ROOM

There's always something taking root in the greenhouse.

When friends and families stroll past the Legacy Garden en route to visit a loved one they can't help but notice the colourful flowers that welcome them. Many of these plants and flowers began as tiny seeds that were carefully coaxed into sturdy, thriving plants by resident green thumbs.

And some time around the middle of September the fruits of another labour of love - specifically tomatoes - grace the plates and palates of Colonel Belcher diners.

Anyone who has enjoyed the invigorating smell of rich dark earth can attest to the incomparable sense of satisfaction that comes with gardening. This sometimes old, sometimes recently discovered passion for plants is rapidly growing at the centre and plans are in the works to expand the very popular activity.

CRAFT ROOM

The Craft Room is commonly referred to as the 'epicenter' of the second floor –a direct result of the buzz and chatter that builds when residents gather here. With an impressive roster of activities, many residents make this destination a routine part of their day.

There are also a number of accomplished artists who assemble regularly in the Craft Room for their Painting Group. Several members of this group, led by a former art college graduate, received First Place, Second Place and Honourable Mention awards with their entries at the 2003 Calgary Exhibition & Stampede.
Their stunning works of art are proudly displayed in their rooms.

The stakes are high when the Blackjack Group meets for a rousing game of cards - but only the player with the most chips at the end of each match can cash them in for first dibs on the chocolate spoils of the game. No one leaves empty handed though, as it's chocolate bars all around after the match.

The ever changing list of Craft Room activities also includes such diverse pastimes as ceramics, handicrafts, BINGO games and even a current affairs group whose members devour the daily newspapers and engage in lively discussions, and sometimes scrapbooking, of their favorite topics.

  LIBRARY

The Library at the Colonel Belcher care centre draws both the conventional scholar and the technologically inquisitive for its two primary programs. With the guidance of volunteers a number of the computer curious have become savvy surfers. Whether they're researching a favorite topic on the internet or emailing friends and family, these inquisitive explorers refuse to be left behind in the electronic revolution. One resident and his off-site buddy have waged a friendly online chess battle that at last count had entered its 10th month running.

Book Talk is another immensely well received activity whose popularity has surged since its onset. Led by two retired librarians, this program combines reading and discussion of topics of interest to its participants. Historical events and figures are popular subjects for this program which will soon extend its service to the less mobile via the Traveling Book Wagon.

In the quiet time between these popular programs you will often find someone lost in a good book, nestled in a cozy chair pulled up to the tall window that overlooks the grounds.
